‘Whatever Works’ may not work for everyone — movie review

Who’s in it?:
Larry David (Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm), Evan Rachel Wood (Across the Universe), Michael McKean (Laverne and Shirley, This is Spinal Tap)

Written and Directed by: Woody Allen

This is my Woody Allen entry into my big summer movie adventure.  I will be honest, I don’t watch a lot of Woody Allen movies.  I’ll also admit, my interest came in the form of Larry David more than the fact that it was Woody Allen.  So answer me this.  What is the big fucking deal about Woody Allen?  For whatever reason, his movies just don’t ring with me.

In Whatever Works, David play an schmuck that gets dumped and by blind chance meets this half-wit woman off the Midwestern bus and she because she has no place else to go, she moves in with him.  Then they get married but at no point do they ever have anything in common.  She thinks he’s a genius.  Why?  Apparently because she’s from Kansas or Oklahoma and he’s a person of the world living in Manhattan where obviously only the best live.

Everyone in this movie comes off as an idiot. Do people from New York really think all of us here in the Midwest are idiot hicks?  Larry David is the only saving grace in this movie, but he’s really just playing a even more loud mouth obnoxious version of his character on Curb Your Enthusiasm.  McKean has little to do.  But I guess if movies about stuck up snob know-it-all a-holes in New York is your thing…whatever works for you.  Or in this case, it doesn’t.

5/10

Would I recommend this movie?: Only if you’re a Woody Allen fan or a die hard LD fan, otherwise pass on it.
