Adapting fairy tales is all the rage these days. From the recent “Snow White and the Huntsman” and “Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters” to the upcoming “Maleficent” and “Cinderella”, Hollywood is having no problems coming up with old stories to retell with sweet special effects. Now, we get “Jack the Giant Slayer”, based on the fairy tales “Jack and the Giant Killer” (1711) and “Jack and the Beanstalk” (1807). This wouldn’t be a bad thing if the whole movie weren’t so…plain.
What a night. Wait, let me rephrase. What a long night. There weren’t a whole lot of surprises at the 2013 Academy Awards. “Argo” won Best Picture but it was “Life of Pi” that won the most awards including the Best Director award that many thought should have gone to Ben Affleck.
Congratulations to Daniel Day-Lewis for becoming the first actor to win three Best Actor awards.
Seth Macfarlane did a fine enough job as host. You could tell he didn’t have a very long leash, though. He was a hell of a lot better than Billy Crystal was last year.
It’s Oscar weekend and this year’s show could be full of surprises. Be sure to cast your vote for Best Picture and check out my predictions for who will take home those little golden Oscar trophies.
