There is a point in “Olympus Has Fallen“, where you’re going to feel like you’ve seen it all before. In fact, if you’ve seen any action movie in the past 25 years, you might already feel that way from simply seeing the trailer. No need to check the marquee. It’s a brand new movie. In “A Good Day to Die Hard”, the fifth installment in the action franchise, Detective John McLane is now a senior member of the NYPD. He’s still bald, but starting to show signs of age with grey stubble and a few more wrinkles. In the last movie, “Live Free or Die Hard”, Mclane made up with estranged daughter. This time around, he’s been searching for his estranged son, Jack (Jai Courtney), only to found out that his boy has been thrown into a Russian prison for assassinating a crime lord in front of a club full of people. McLane assumes his son has fallen into drugs and desperation so he goes to Russia to help his son.
Sometimes it doesn’t matter how good your lead actors are if the story takes forever to get going. This is the problem with “Safe House” starring Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington. They’re both as good as here as they usually are. That’s actually part of the problem. Both of them seem to be just kinda going through the motions, which is about all they can do, given the script they have to work with.
