I’m sure at some point there were good intentions about making a movie based on the Grimms’ Brothers fairty tale, “Hansel and Gretel”. Then something terrible happened. Maybe it was the greed of the studio, opting to for a big weekend; or maybe it was ignoring a keen script reader who kept reminding everyone the screenplay was awful — but instead of a Tim Buron-esque trippy fairy tale about a boy and girl battling a witch while lost in the woods, we get a mindless action movie with crappy CGi. ‘Broken City’ is a broken movie with a pretty great cast — movie review
Ah, January movies. Every now and then there is a great one — at least I want to believe that. This isn’t it. Of course, like any movie, “Broken City” could have been amazing.
Unfortunately, the director set out to make a completely different movie than he was given in the screenplay and it ends up being a mess. ‘Killing Them Softly’ is a preachy snooze-fest — movie review
You know the economy is tough when organized criminal organizations are cutting corners and costs. The idea of building a movie around economic hard times for mafia bad guys wouldn’t be so bad if the filmmakers behind “Killing Them Softly” hadn’t felt it was necessary to constantly bombard the audience with real news footage and sound bytes that serve as a constant reminder that our nation is facing its toughest economical crunch ever—as if we all really need that reminder.
